Joshua Tree Seed Pods
Hello Friends,
Two weekends ago we drove to Las Vegas to see my sister Joy Demain perform in a production of Mary Poppins at the Spring Mountain Ranch, a lovely outdoor venue on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Super Summer Theatre produces three musicals every summer at Spring Mountain Ranch. Since Joy needed to be at the venue fairly early I got the opportunity to shoot some desert plants there in nice late afternoon-early evening light, just before the sun dropped behind the Red Rock Canyon hills.
I was told that these are the seed pods of Joshua trees. I've seen Joshua trees at Joshua Tree National Park, but never before encountered them at the time of year when such pods were out. I took this shot with a Fuji W3 camera with frame sides for phantogram processing supported nicely on the tree. The width of this image was approximately eight inches.
Next weekend on Sunday I'll be presenting a 15 minute video at a VSC (Virtual Stereoscopic Community) zoom meeting. The video more or less describes my many-year obsession with photographic phantograms and shows how they're made. The meeting will begin at 11:00 am pacific time. Info at VSC's website at https://stereosite.com/virtual-stereoscopic-community/. Later on I'll post the video on You-Tube and provide a link.
Also of note is the upcoming 3D-Con 2022 in Tacoma from August 1-8, at last getting back to the live in-person gathering we've not had since Covid. It'll be a busy few days as I'll be re-connecting with old friends, teaching a workshop, exhibiting in the art gallery, showing a stereo-theatre video of macro shots from Costa Rica, and hawking my books and cards in the trade fair. Hope to see you there. Info at https://www.3d-con.com/.
Regards,
Barry Rothstein
