Rainbow & Ollie and a Window Violation

Hi All,

First off, I want to apologize I'm not a Maker Faire in San Diego this weekend as I'd advertised. I've got what I think is pinched nerve sciatic pain in one leg, and I could only walk with pain. The thought of loading up the car, driving, hauling, setting up, going up and down a step-ladder and all that I do just could not be do-able, so I had to bail.

Yesterday we met Rainbow, and as you can see, she and Ollie hit it off pretty well. I tried hard and fruitlessly to isolate Rainbow in some shots by herself, but this dog would not sit still. Even so, this shot is fun, and tells a little story.

It was shot with a Fuji W3, and I approximated it into a phantogram by basing it around four points on the ground from both the left eye and right eye images. They become the phantogram's anchor, its stereo window. If you were to alternately open and close each eye, looking at each corner of the image, they should line up precisely. That's how I approximate a hand-held shot pointing downward into a phantogram.

On the right hand side of the image Ollie's head provides a great example of a 3-D window violation. To get a sense of what I mean, alternatively look with the left and right eye and you'll see a vertical band that contains only the right eye image. That's a huge no-no for stereo photographers, and we'll chide newbies endlessly about avoiding it and how to fix it.

But a window violation is in the very nature of a phantogram when the subject extends beyond the frame on one side or the other. This image is being told relative to the four corners that make up the window, let the rest fall where it may.

Today will be remembered by many of us as a dark day in American history. Congrats to the angry white men from a sad white man. I guess time will tell what this all means. We feel violated. We're victims of OTSD, Ongoing Trauma Stress Disorder. The courts are being packed with lifetime justices that can be counted on to be pro business, pro money, anti consumer, pro unborn life, anti abortion, anti women, pro religious freedom to discriminate, pro gun, anti muslim, pro wealthy, anti poor, anti immigrant, pro white, anti color.
