Soap bubble forming on a Gerbera Daisy by Don Komarechka
A year ago I joined the Photographic Society of America (PSA) and I'm glad I did. Looking back I don't know what took me so long, but I've found it to be an organization of good people, fun, and a valuable resource. They're mostly dedicated to 2D photography, but also have some 3D offerings. Their website is https://psa-photo.org/.
A few weeks ago I got an email from the PSA offering a free macro photography workshop by Don Komarechka of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, author of "Macro Photography - The Universe at Our Feet". Having recently published a book of 3-D macro photography I was intrigued and checked out Don's website, and was happy to see that his book included a 3-D section. I contacted Don and we've since swapped books and I attended his online workshop.
Don's developed a well deserved reputation as a mad scientist and explorer in the macro photography realm. His new book is a visual treat and extensive teaching guide on macro photography. I hope to gain some useful knowledge as I read his book. Regarding the amazing image presented here, according to Don ...
"This image is a freezing soap bubble forming on a Gerbera Daisy... not a scene you'd ever expect to finmd in nature! The flower was placed outside to acclimate to the cold temperatures and a bubble was placed in the middle. Temperatures colder than -8C / 17F allow for the soap film to crystalize into a sphere of frost on a calm winter night. The image was shot with a deWijs 3D macro lens. Timing is critical, as the bubble freezes solid in less than 10 seconds, and the best image is always found before it becomes completely frozen."

Speaking of workshops, for anyone interested in learning to make "tabletop phantograms", I'll be holding a zoom workshop on Saturday, September 18 at 10am pacific time, hosted by the Los Angeles 3D Club. The link for it will be http://www.la3d.club.
Tabletop phants are the best way to start making phantograms, and they can be a lot easier than most people think. I'll be teaching:
1) how to shoot a tabletop phantogram with just a) a sheet of paper; and b) a cellphone (or any digital 2D or stereo camera).

I send out a weekly email of these. If you'd like to be included, please go to the contact page and send me an email.
