A Mutant Dandelion??

Hi All,

On a recent road trip we were on Salt Spring Island, one of the gulf islands in British Columbia, Canada. Out walking our dog Pepper I spotted this specimen along the trail. It looked in every way like a common dandelion seed pod except for the greater thickness and smaller number of its projections (there's probably a better word). I looked for more, but only found that one.

I'm a big fan of dandelions, and to my knowledge I've never seen another quite like it. I'm wondering if any of you know what it is, and could provide a photo link to such information. Thanks.
