Hibiscus in Japan
Hello Friends,
On our recent trip to Japan I noticed two types of hibiscus plants, the top one a large specimen in Sawara's old town area along the river, and the other much smaller across the street from our rental house in Akumino. In them I spotted a significant difference between these and what I typically have seen elsewhere. Please excuse my lack of proper botanical terms, but I'm used to seeing hibiscus with a long smooth stamen stalk capped with a bright fireworks spread at the end. These stamen I found in Japan were white (or off-white) with intricate patterns along the stalk and a less pronounced cap.
An example of what I'm used to seeing from hibiscus can be found at http://3ddigitalphoto.com/ImageofTheWeek.asp?week=05-02-2020. I'd appreciate any commentary from the botanists in the crowd, I know there are at least a few of you out there.
Regards,
Barry Rothstein
