Happy New Year 2024
Hello Friends,
Here are two wine glass images. I was commissioned to produce the upper one in February, 2021 for an invitation. A San Francisco bay area bank was putting on a gala event for all of its heavy hitters at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), where at the time there was a major 3-D exhibit. After going through a great number of suggestions, they settled on a redo of a wine and cheese image I produced several years ago. It was my image-of-the-week for August 11, 2018, and has been one of my most popular greeting cards. But they insisted a white tablecloth.
I warned the buyer that the white backdrop would produce more ghosting, but in any case I was happy to produce this for them. In fact I prefer the lower image with the patterned backdrop, largely due to the interesting refractions going through the wine glass from the tablecloth. My friend Chris Schneberger exhibited a series of whiskey bottle phantograms at both the NSA (National Stereoscopic Union) and ISU (International Stereoscopic Union) gatherings this year, using country maps of each whiskey for backdrops, and spoke of this refractory effect in a talk he gave at the ISU. With Chris' permission perhaps I'll be able to show you one of his soon.
Here's to hoping 2024 brings us enlightenment much more than it descends us into madness. It's a scary time, but I won't go into that today.
For those of you who've read to the end, if you email me back an address within the USA I'll mail you the 2018 wine and cheese card, subject to not running out of them.
Happy Holidays,
Barry Rothstein
I send out a weekly email of these. If you'd like to be included, please go to the contact page and send me an email.
